God is Enough

Have you seen the slogan ‘You are Enough’ in social media posts or on mugs, shirts, or wall hangings? It is proclaimed as, perhaps, a boost of comfort, a validation, or an empowerment. Even in Christian circles the phrase ‘You are Enough’ is declared. As with other things your mind is fed, have you paused to consider if this proclamation is biblical?

To be blunt, we are not enough… which is why we are to be dependent on God and why we need Jesus.

GOD is enough. He is complete, lacking nothing that is good or just. God is every aspect of all that is worthy and satisfying to our souls.

There is a song that beautifully portrays how God is enough – ‘Honey in the Rock’ by Brooke Ligertwood. The lyrics are powerful statements of how God completes his people. God is enough; only he can satisfy. We don’t need to worry, because everything we need God already has! God is all that we need.

By recalling how God has worked in the past, we can more readily trust him in our present and future situations. The lyrics of ‘Honey in the Rock’ recount some ways that God provided for the Israelites. When they were in desperate need, God was all they needed. He was enough for them, and his provisions satisfied them. Despite their complaining and lack of trust, God mercifully provided for them: water from the stone when they were thirsty  (Exodus 17:3-6), manna on the ground when they were hungry (Exodus 16:1-5), and honey in the rock when they finally entered their Promised Land (Deuteronomy 32:12-13).

On our own accord, we cannot commune with God; we need Jesus to pay the price for our sin. We are not enough, but Jesus is. Jesus, our Rock, satisfies our souls with merciful forgiveness from God. The sacrifice of his broken body and spilled blood have the power to bring our soul healing. We need the risen Jesus and he meets our need!

Like the end of this song, we can declare that it is so sweet to trust in Jesus, who is our Rock. Take a listen to ‘Honey in the Rock’ and let it encourage you that our God is enough!
