Words to Live By

In this day and age, we seldom need to memorize. With a tap of our fingers, we can solicit our computer of choice for answers we are seeking. Our eyes are opened to much information – and sometimes too much information.
What if with that same mindset we asked of God, “Open my eyes so that I may see wonderful things in your law” (Psalm 119:18 NIV, letter O in Do LAPS!)?
Unlike results of an internet search, we can be confident that God’s words are truth. “For the word of the LORD is right and true; he is faithful in all he does” (Psalm 33:4 NIV). When we hold back from reading in his Word and meditating on his words, the almighty holiness of God begins to fade in our mind’s eyes or at least get fuzzy in our heart’s vision. “Sadly, sometimes people stop believing that God is who he says he is, and they stop trusting in him. They stop following God and obeying him. However, that does not change the fact that God is who he says he is!” (Follow and Lead, pg. 38).
We need to remember that God is God and we are not.
Doesn’t this sound so obvious?
However, we slip into thinking that we are the ones who deserve justice or we know the future or we presume others’ thoughts or we boast that our own way is the right way.
Doesn’t this sound like we nudge ourselves into position number one?
God proclaims, “I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me” (Isaiah 46:9b, letter U for unique in Follow and Lead). As believers, how do we keep God as the one to whom we bow?
Recorded in Matthew chapter four, we read that after Jesus’ baptism, after his solitude in the wilderness, and after his forty days and nights of fasting, Jesus was tempted by the devil. The ‘father of lies’ (John 8:44c) tried to lure Jesus away from worshiping God alone.
How did Jesus handle this in his, at least physically, weakened state? He drew from his Father’s well of truth! Knowing the power of his Father’s words, he quoted scriptures to resist the devil’s temptations.
Jesus answered, ‘It is written…’ (Matthew 4:4,7,10). While living as one of us, Jesus modeled this way to glorify God and do his will.
Let’s commit the words of the one, true God to memory so we can live for his glory alone!
