Choosing to Forgive
When families are torn apart due to persecution, emotional and spiritual wounds take time to heal. Christians left in the aftermath of persecution cling to Jesus and his example to help them wade through their struggles. Not only does he understand their heartaches, but he is with them. By the power of the Holy Spirit, those suffering can also extend forgiveness to their persecutors. When these believers share their stories – to ask for prayer, to help us understand their plight, and to encourage us to stand firm in our faith – they reflect that their choice to forgive allows them to carry on living and be a witness. They are no longer bound by the chains of unforgiveness, no matter their circumstances, and their joy in the Lord is refreshed. They are encouraged and strengthened by the God who hears our prayers for the body of Christ.
Let’s use Psalm 56 to guide our prayer for our persecuted brothers and sisters:
Be merciful, O God, to your persecuted children, who suffer in the name of Jesus. They are slandered and attacked by those set against you. When these children of yours are afraid, may they trust in you and praise you, remembering that you hold them close and will not let them go. Bless them with your strength and joy in your salvation. Give them courage, in obedience to Jesus, to forgive their persecutors. May these believers shine your light, and may their persecutors’ spiritual eyes be opened to you.
