Have you ever had a guide lead you on a grand adventure?
If you did, you trusted that person to have the knowledge and experience to lead you safely.
Life is the greatest adventure! It takes us through changes of scenery, variable conditions, new experiences, and unexpected maneuvers.
The very best guide we can have is the one who creates life, cares the most for us, and is in control – the one and only Jesus Christ. Think of the adventure that living as a Christian is when we let him lead us!
Because he is omniscient, we can trust where he leads us.
Because he is loving, we can trust his care for us.
Because he is strong, we can trust when he helps us.
Because he is faithful, we can trust that he will not leave us.
A follower of Jesus lets Jesus lead. So often we struggle with that, though. We get scared or complacent or arrogant. We might push or pull, sidestep or stop. We might barge ahead, bargain, or give pushback. We forget who it is that is leading us!
Let’s remember that:
God wants us to rest in him. “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10a ESV).
God wants us to seek him first. “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13 NIV).
God wants us to remain in him. “Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him” (Colossians 2:6 ESV).
God wants us to follow him with confidence. “Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD” (Psalm 31:24 NIV).
This means trusting him when things do not turn out how we think they should. That can feel uncomfortable or disappointing or annoying. Because we can’t see the big picture, it can be confusing.
But we follow the One who does see the big picture! By humbly trusting, learning, obeying, and loving, we can allow God to use situations to grow us closer to him. The adventures of life give us opportunities to depend on him, to grow in him, and to submit to him.
God calls us to trust him and obey him.
Isn’t that what following really is?
